Discover Australia (Australian National Travel Association) 1957 Poster

$22$48

English-born artist Eileen Mayo (1906-1994) arrived in Australia in 1953, and soon after was commissioned to design posters for the Australian National Travel Association, as well as stamps featuring the country’s fauna and mammals for the Postal Department. This exquisite example of Mayo’s work features an illustration of an indigenous Australian man wearing a ceremonial headdress, and an emu, its tracks lining the top border. The word “Australia” at the bottom is scribed using a pattern similar in style to indigenous dot paintings. Earth tones fill the poster, representative of the native people’s deep connection with the land.
